Sequence biostratigraphy and depositional environment of tertiary sediments in the central and southern parts of song Hong basin
Abstract
The article presents results in sequence biostratigraphic study of Tertiary sediments in the central and southern parts of Song Hong basin using the Vail’s sequence stratigraphy model (1987). This model consists of three main systems tracts: lowstand system tract (LST), transgressive system tract (TST) and highstand system tract (HST). Of these, the lowstand system tract is the potential hydrocarbon reservoir thanks to its basin-floor and slope fans. These formations are very thick, widely distributed and sealed by shale and silkstone containing substantial organic matters. Biostratigraphic analytical results were collected from 27 wells in the area. A total of 19 biostratigraphic sequences have been identified from the studied sedimentary section: Eocene spans E2 - E4, Oligocene spans O2 - O4, Miocene spans M1 - M9 and Pliocene spans P1 - P4. The lowstand system tract (LST) and erosional unconformity were also recorded in some wells in the studied area.
